Natural and Cultural Landmarks

Natural Landmarks:

• Natural singleton ‘Rocky Sea’ (Kamenné more) – natural reservation right in the area of Vyhne. It was formed by volcanic activity several thousands of years ago. It became a natural reservation in 1937 (situated 1 kilometre away from the hotel)

• Botanic Garden in Banská Štiavnica – the garden was founded by the Mining Academy in 1838 and there are trees and bushes here from all over the world (situated 12.8 kilometres away from the hotel).

Technical Landmarks:

• Banská Štiavnica – artificial lakes ‘Tajchy’: artificial water reservoirs, positioned elegantly in the natural surroundings, are among the touristic jewels of the region. In the past they were built as a resource of aquatic energy for drawing mining water and ore processing. Today there are 24 of them and they serve as recreation water bodies or sources of drinking water. The best-known ‘tajchy’ are Počúvadlo, Richňava or Evičkino jazero (Little Eve’s Lake) – 27.3 kilometres away from the hotel.

• • Banská Štiavnica – Open-Air Mining Museum: the museum exposition above ground presents old mining buildings and machines. The most enticing attraction is a descent into the Tunnel of Bartholomew. Equipped with a mining coat, helmet and lantern you will embark on a 1.5-kilometre-long walk through the underground so as to feel the conditions under which miners used to mine ore of precious stones.

Cultural Landmarks:

• Banská Štiavnica – Calvary: Baroque Calvary on a steep hill of volcanic origin is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Central Europe. The Calvary was erected by Jesuits in the middle of the 18th Century with the help of money and gifts raised by the town’s inhabitants (situated 12.8 kilometres away from the hotel).

• Banská Štiavnica – Square of the Holy Trinity: the main square of the town was formed between the 14th and 16th Centuries. Houses of more well-off dwellers and the Church of St. Catherine with the adjacent Town Hall encircle a remarkably designed scene dominated by the Baroque statue of the Holy Trinity (plague column) – situated 12.8 kilometres away from the hotel.

• Banská Štiavnica – the Old Castle: it represented an imperative component of the defence mechanisms of the town at the time of Turkish raids. Nowadays you can pay a visit to an exposition of anti-Turkish battles with a nice statue of a Turk, or a display of contemporary weapons. Apart from that, a remarkable vista of the town may be cherished there. In the Knight Hall or on the court of the Old Castle you may book an utmost romantic wedding ceremony (12.8 kilometres away from the hotel).

• Banská Štiavnica – the New Castle: originally a parish church dating back to the beginnings of the 13th Century, it was re-modelled into a fortress during Turkish irruptions. Today it houses a museum exposition of the oldest history of the region called ‘Miners are coming’ (Baníci prichádzajú), displays of historical targets and works of the art of blacksmiths and of the traditional folk production of pipes in Štiavnica.

• Svätý Anton – Manor-house in Svätý Anton: this Baroque-Classicist manor-house in a historical park with a little lake is a sought-after museum. Interiors with original furnishing, paintings and works of folk art, such as the Golden Salon with furniture which was donated by Mary Theresa to her daughter Maria Antoinette, all testify about riches and tastes of the owners whereas their vast collections of the hunting museum demonstrate their relation to the woods and hunting (18.7 kilometres away from the hotel).
